This is the first of several workshop residencies for Akutagawa that I’m helping Tom Lee Projects with at the Henson Carriage House in NYC in preparation for its remount and tour in 2022. Akutagawa is a stage production about the life and stories of Ryūnosuke Akutagawa using projections and traditional Japanese Kuruma Ningyo puppetry. It is a cross-Pacific collaboration between Tom Lee and Koryū Nishikawa V of Hachiōji Kuruma Ningyō, and a team of theater makers in Japan and the US. It premiered in Japan in 2021 with shadow film sequences we created for projections.
